Thief in the Night: Usurping Women’s Healthcare in Local Government
Another poor example of the Stupak debacle in the National Healthcare Debate trickling down to states.
As of last week, Wake County Employees can no longer use their health insurance to pay for abortions.
Looks like longtime women’s health opponent, N.C. House Minority Leader Paul Stam, is behind the push to force counties and city governments to cherry-pick which healthcare provisions they will pay for. The Wake County decision from last week comes only days after Apex lead the way. The most disconcerting part of this move is the success Stam is having in taking away this coverage virtually overnight.
Stam has followed the lead of his legislative aid, Apex town mayor Keith Weatherly, who just “stumbled onto” the “shocking revelation” that his town’s comprehensive private insurance included standard medical coverage, namely abortion coverage (as do 80% of private insurance plans). Gosh, that sounds so coincidental! I bet it just blew his ignorant mind to learn that government pays for a service he will never need. This wanton stripping of women’s healthcare coverage comes shortly after his bossman, Rep. Stam announced on his Twitter that he was hard at work to strip abortion coverage from the national healthcare plan.
Ya know, I think I’m gonna run for office in Apex and just put in a proposal cutting other services that are likely to be medically necessary for him, like, say… Viagra. You see, I personally believe it would be immoral for state or local government to paying for it. I’d wage my first born that these cherry-picking tactics won’t ever go that far…
